IPX7 IPX8 Immersion Chamber Manufacturer
BONAD manufactures IPX7 immersion tanks and IPX8 pressure immersion chambers for temporary immersion, continuous immersion and deep-water pressure simulation according to IEC 60529 test requirements.
Available configurations include stainless steel immersion tanks, electric lifting systems, transparent pressure vessels, powered-sample setups, heated chambers, continuous immersion equipment and programmable deep-water pressure test machines.
Standard models and engineered-to-order solutions are available according to specimen dimensions, weight, operating state, required water depth or pressure, test duration and water temperature.
What Is an IPX7 IPX8 Immersion Chamber?
IPX7 and IPX8 immersion equipment evaluates whether an enclosure provides the required protection against harmful water ingress under controlled immersion conditions.
IPX7 Temporary Immersion
IPX7 testing uses an open water tank. The enclosure is immersed at the water level and for the duration defined by IEC 60529.
Tank dimensions, usable water depth and specimen handling must allow the sample to be positioned correctly.
IPX8 Continuous or Specified Immersion
IPX8 applies to continuous or otherwise specified immersion. Pressure, simulated depth, duration and operating conditions are defined by the relevant product standard or agreed between the manufacturer and user.
A sealed pressure vessel is commonly used when the required depth cannot be reproduced practically in an open tank.
Applicable Standards and Industry References
The applicable test standard should be confirmed according to the product category, intended market and customer specification before selecting the immersion equipment.
IEC 60529
The primary international reference for degrees of protection provided by electrical equipment enclosures. It defines the IP code and the general test requirements for IPX7 temporary immersion and IPX8 continuous or specified immersion.
ISO 20653
Applies to degrees of protection for electrical equipment installed in road vehicles. It is relevant to automotive sensors, connectors, control modules, lighting and other vehicle-mounted electrical components.
DIN 40050-9
A legacy German automotive IP protection reference that may still appear in existing drawings, qualification documents and procurement specifications. New projects should be checked against the current customer specification and ISO 20653 requirements.
Product-Specific Standards
Individual product standards may define additional requirements for preparation, operating state, test pressure, duration, water temperature and acceptance criteria. These requirements take priority where they differ from general IP test conditions.
IEC 60529 Test Conditions and Acceptance Criteria
Precise specimen positioning, duration and pass/fail evaluation are essential for meaningful waterproof testing. The applicable product standard should also be reviewed before testing.
Temporary Immersion Parameters
The enclosure is completely immersed in fresh water in the specified service position.
Specified Immersion Conditions
IPX8 does not have one universal depth, pressure or duration for every product.
- Follow the relevant product standard when it defines the test conditions.
- Otherwise, agree the conditions between the manufacturer and user.
- The agreed conditions must be more severe than the IPX7 test conditions.
- Define pressure or simulated depth, duration, temperature, orientation and operating state.
- Confirm whether a single-stage or multi-stage pressure program is required.
How Is the Test Result Evaluated?
Under the general acceptance principles, water entering the enclosure must not:

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about IEC 60529 immersion testing, equipment selection, calibration compliance, certification, maintenance and operational safety.
What are the IEC 60529 IPX7 test conditions?
For an enclosure below 850 mm high, its lowest point is positioned 1,000 mm below the water surface. For an enclosure 850 mm high or taller, its highest point is positioned 150 mm below the surface. The duration is 30 minutes, and the temperature difference between the water and equipment should normally not exceed 5 K.
How are IPX8 pressure, depth and duration determined?
IPX8 does not specify one universal pressure, simulated depth or duration for every product. The conditions should follow the applicable product standard or be agreed between the manufacturer and user. They must be more severe than the IPX7 conditions and reflect the product's intended use.
Does any water ingress automatically mean the product has failed?
Not necessarily. Limited ingress may be acceptable if it does not interfere with correct operation, impair electrical safety, cause tracking along insulation surfaces or reach live parts not designed to operate when wet. Product-specific standards may define stricter acceptance criteria.
How should an IPX7 or IPX8 immersion chamber be selected?
Selection depends on the required IP level, specimen dimensions and weight, water depth or pressure, test duration and temperature conditions. Also confirm whether electric lifting, full-view observation, powered-sample testing or programmable pressure stages are required.
Which measurement parameters should be calibrated?
Depending on the equipment configuration, the main parameters may include pressure, water temperature, test time and water-level measurement. Pressure sensors, temperature sensors, displays and timers can be calibrated or verified at agreed measurement points.
Can ISO/IEC 17025 calibration certificates be provided?
Yes. Depending on the order scope, BONAD can arrange third-party calibration and provide certificates issued by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory. Required parameters, ranges, calibration points and accreditation scope should be confirmed before ordering.
Can CE and other compliance documents be provided?
Depending on the equipment model, destination market and order scope, BONAD can provide available CE-related conformity documents, calibration certificates, inspection records, operating manuals and other agreed technical documentation.
How often should the equipment be recalibrated and maintained?
The interval should be defined by the user's quality system, test frequency, equipment stability and applicable laboratory requirements. Recalibration or verification is also recommended after sensor replacement, major repair, relocation or abnormal measurement results.
What water and materials are suitable for immersion testing?
Clean fresh water should normally be used unless another medium is specified. Available equipment may use SUS304 stainless steel tanks, tempered-glass observation windows, transparent pressure-resistant vessels and application-specific seals. Saline, corrosive or chemically contaminated liquids should be confirmed before equipment selection.
What routine maintenance and safety checks are required?
Drain or replace contaminated water, clean and dry the vessel, inspect seals, hoses, valves, cable entries and lifting components, and check pressure zero readings regularly. For IPX8 systems, verify interlocks, pressure-relief devices and emergency stops, and fully depressurize the chamber before opening.
